Intensive Couples Therapy
Intensive couples therapy is a more condensed form of treatment that is designed to get to the issues quickly and produce change in a shorter time frame. This format can be useful for any couple, but it’s particularly useful for couples who are in crisis, on the brink of divorce or couples who have been to several therapists with no little to no improvement. This is the format regularly used by Dr. David Schnarch, founder of Crucible Approach and Crucible Neurobiological Therapy.
This structure, which consists of three hour sessions for four consecutive days, allows for the therapist to better see and address core issues affecting the individual and the relationship. Our experiences with intensive couples therapy suggest that producing changes at the brain level can be better accomplished, in large part, due to the intensity and repetition of this format. Couples report more dramatic changes and leave with a much better understanding of what their problems are as well as how to better resolve them.
Typical problems addressed in sessions include lack of positive connection, volatile arguments, acute regressions, substance abuse problems, intimacy problems, low sexual desire, sexual dysfunctions and affairs.
Intensive couples therapy might be a good option for you if you have tried a more traditional therapy and don’t feel like the real problems were resolved. It can also be an effective way to get a jump start on working through your relationship problems or getting “unstuck” from a gridlocked position with your partner.
